EasyPro Buying Guide

How to Choose the Right EasyPro Pond System

The one decision that makes or breaks a pond build is matching the equipment to your water volume. Undersize the filter and the water stays cloudy. Oversize it and you overspend. This guide maps your pond to the right EasyPro system using real model ratings. We size these every day as an authorized EasyPro dealer, so if you want a second set of eyes before you buy, call us.

Step 1: Know your pond's gallons

Everything else keys off this number. For a rectangular pond:

Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Average depth (ft) × 7.5 = gallons

Example: an 11 × 16 pond at 2 ft average depth is about 11 × 16 × 2 × 7.5 = 2,640 gallons. If your pond is irregular, measure the average length and width and use the same math. When in doubt, round up.

Step 2: Match your pond type to a turnover rate

Turnover is how often your whole pond passes through the filter. It sets your pump size.

  • Koi ponds: circulate the full volume about once per hour. A 3,000 gallon koi pond wants roughly 3,000 GPH at your waterfall height.
  • Water gardens (few or no fish): once every two hours is fine, so you can run a smaller pump.

Pump output drops as the water climbs to your waterfall. If you have real head height, size the pump up a step.

Skid-mount filtration systems, by max gallons

The all-in-one option. Each system pre-plumbs a pressurized bead filter, a self-priming external pump, and a UV clarifier, ready to connect.

Pressurized bead filters, by max gallons

Mechanical and biological filtration if you're pairing it with your own pump. Ratings assume a fish load; for heavy koi stocking, size up.

TH circulation pumps, by output

Match GPH to your pond volume for once-per-hour koi turnover. These are the free-flow ratings; expect less as waterfall height increases.

Aeration is sized differently

Aeration goes by surface area and depth, not gallons. Backyard ponds run a 1/4 HP kit. Larger ponds and small lakes, up to several acres, use 3/4 HP rocking-piston systems like the PA86W. If you're not sure how many diffusers your shape needs, that's a good one to call about.

Sizing questions people ask us

What size filter do I need for a 5,000 gallon koi pond?

For a 5,000 gallon koi pond, step up to the 6,000 gallon tier: an SMF6000 skid-mount system or a PBF6000BL bead filter. Koi are messy, so sizing the filter above your actual volume keeps the water clear. Pair it with a pump around 5,000 GPH for once-per-hour turnover.

How do I calculate my pond's gallons?

For a rectangular pond, multiply length in feet by width in feet by average depth in feet, then multiply by 7.5. An 11 by 16 pond at 2 feet deep is about 2,640 gallons.

What pump size do I need for a 3,000 gallon pond?

For a koi pond, aim for once-per-hour turnover, so about 3,000 GPH at your waterfall height. The EasyPro TH150 puts out 3,100 GPH at free flow and is a good match at low head. If your waterfall is tall, size up to the TH250.

Do EasyPro skid-mount systems include everything?

Yes. Each SMF system comes with a pressurized bead filter, a self-priming external pump, and a UV clarifier, all pre-plumbed and ready to connect to your incoming and outgoing lines.

I'm between two sizes. Should I go up or down?

Go up, especially for koi or a heavy fish load. Extra filtration capacity costs a little more up front and saves you from cloudy water later. For a lightly stocked water garden, the smaller size is usually fine.
